As a former wedding officiant and current wedding organizer, I, Veronica Moya, will never get tired of saying this: Hire professional<\/strong> vendors for your wedding. In my years of experience, I have seen a bunch of vendors that phone it in and do a sloppy job. It irritates me to the core, so I want to help you avoid people like this. When you hire an officiant, for example, you have to keep a few things in mind:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Always remember that it is very easy to become a legal wedding officiant here in New York City. It takes a little doing to become one. You don’t need to be American, you don’t even need to live here to become a legal wedding officiant. So, you should be mindful when you hire someone, as just because they are licensed to officiate your wedding, doesn’t mean that they know what they’re doing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, make sure that you interview the officiant before you hire them, watch videos of them, see how they talk, how they present themselves, how they dress, etcetera. It is very important that, before your wedding day, you leave the shyness behind and have conversations with your vendors. I have seen all sorts of bad dress codes in my day. For example, there is this well-known wedding officiant who has been doing it for 12 to 15 years. She’s known in the business, she works with a company similar to mine and seems very professional. However, I have found pictures of her officiating a very formal wedding in sweatpants and a jersey. Personally, I think doing that is distasteful, unprofessional, thoughtless, and just wrong. In addition to that, I know this woman’s prices and they are not cheap. I also once saw an officiant dressed as a \u201csexy librarian\u201d, wearing glasses, tight black pants, and some really high stilettos. She looked great, but not well dressed to officiate a wedding. The officiant\u2019s job is to be present for the couple, not trying to be sexy. The officiant should blend in, be kind of invisible and stand out with their words, their feelings and emotional touch, not their clothes. You may think that I’m being judgmental, and that\u2019s okay. The point is, it doesn\u2019t go well with my brand.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You also have to take into account that some officiants, who’ve been doing this for a very, very long time, work on automatic pilot, so they may run to your wedding on their way to something else, like a social event, and forget to take you and your ceremony as seriously as you may want them to. So if you hire an officiant without researching and speaking to them, you can end up hiring someone who doesn’t have a lot of experience, making things easy to go wrong in many ways, or someone who couldn’t care to take your wedding seriously.
